CHURCH OF SAN CRISTOVO DE NEMIÑA A small church, measuring 13 x 6m, it is the smallest of the Romanesque churches in the region. It has only one rectangular nave, wooden roof and a square apse, with an entrance arch resting on two adjoining columns, each with its capitals decorated with plant motifs, similar to those in the church of Frixe. The vault which covers the apse is pointed. Despite lacking any outstanding decorative elements, even if it is well proportioned and is simple in style (the only additions being a belltower in the XVIII century and a sacristy to one of the sides of the apse), it represents a building of high architectural interest within rural Romanesque art. According to Cardinal Xeronimo del Hoyo in his "Memorias" (Memories) , this church was raided twice by the English. Its income was so modest that it was only entitled to "half a cow given by a parishioner and eight "ducados" donated by the owner of a sailing vessel" ("ducados" were old coins, no longer used). |
